copyright:

Are you running the risk of violating someone's copyright?

Here are a few guidelines to avoid legal problems with copyright.

If you're using material you've found published on another internet site or in some traditional publication, ask yourself some simple questions

  1. Is your intention to earn a profit in using the material?

  2. What is the nature of your work . . . will you in any way be competing with the person who owns the material you're using?
  3. Are you using a substantial part of the other person's material without giving them credit? If you're extracting a few words or a couple of paragraphs from a 500 page book, it is far different from taking 3 lines from a 6 line poem.
  4. Will your use of the material deprive the owner of the original material of any income?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you are probably are violating someone's copyright.

Here are some other precautions:

Read any copyright information/agreement which the originator of the "borrowed" materials may provide.

Sometimes a message giving credit to the creator/owner and a link to the origin of the materials will meet their needs. The material used should be in its complete and original form.

If you are ever notified of a possible copyright infringement, remove the materials in question as soon as the issue is brought to your attention. If you are cooperative you might avoid any harsh penalties and perhaps might even be able to negotiate a reasonable agreement to continue using the material if it is important to you.

Inform yourself about copyright laws. We have a few useful links at the end of this 2 part copyright article based on over 20 years experience in international business and publishing.
