That isn't just a headline invented to catch your attention.
I have lived through computer provoked health issues, starting with my very first computer.
First, I'm going to relate a bit of my experience, then I will offer some solutions.
When I bought my first home computer, I spent hours upon hours in front a my Tandy TRS-80. (If that doesn't date me, nothing will).
A few months after getting this first computer, I developed back pains so acute that I could hardly walk. I went through countless medical tests and chiropractic treatments that didn't provide a solution.
Then, through my work I became involved with publishing a study that had been done concerning the problems being discovered in the use of computers in the workplace.
The recommendation of using ergonomic chairs was the key which led to my rearranging my workspace to solve my problem.
Next, my doctor, after learning that I spent most of my working time and waking hours seated at a desk recommended that I do something to incorporate more physical activity into my life style.
When I followed his advice, but not in the way he was expecting, my health improved.
Finally, in recent years, after completely changing my life style, and careers, I again found myself slipping into a sendentary style of living and this time most of my hours are spent in front of a computer building and running internet related businesses. Again my health suffered and I suffered more back pains. A new solution was needed and found.
The preventative road to good health
Prevention is the best cure according to the old cliché, and after enduring the pain and expense of having to fix my health problems, I wholeheartedly agree.
All my solutions, to the previous problems can be applied as preventative measures, with the great benefit that doing so will help you avoid the suffering that you'd have to endure if you resort to them as solutions.
Health Solution #1
Use an ergonomic chair if you're spending more than a few minutes a day seated in front of a computer. Please, before you rush out and buy one, or go on line and purchase something that is labled as an "ergonomic" chair, check on
this item offered at Amazon.com
.
THIS is the modle, the style of chair, I used with much success. Other chairs may be labled as ergonomic, but I cannot vouch for them. As far as I know it may be nothing more than a sales gimmic. You may not want this particular chair, but please use the listing as a guide to your purchase.
Health Solution #2
Incorporate some activity into your daily routine. I started out jogging, faithfully every day, rain-or-shine for about 6 months. Then I discovered that I just couldn't feel good about adding another 30 to 60 minutes of activity into a life in which I already didn't have enough time to do all I wanted.
I studied the situation and discovered that instead of commuting to work every day, I could actually save time by riding a bicycle. I saved money on parking and or public transportation costs and the big bonus was I was making a positive impact on my health.
Even though I purchased one of the first mountain bikes ever sold in North America - they were very expensive at the time - the time and money I saved nearly paid for the bike. I used it faithfully for several years until another carreer change made commuting via bicycle impractical.
This is the type of bicycle I used.

This or a similar product would be a good choice if I were making this move again.
Health Solution #3
Incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Well, now with a changed life style I've had to look for a new solution. This I've found in a novel new computer application called Break Pal. I must admit that I don't have years of experience using this product, but since it is offered with 90 day trial period and the price is very affordable, I just couldn't resist.
Stay fit, right at your desk with Break Pal

Recently I discovered another exercise alternative:
