Some web pages break all the rules and still come out on the top of the heap.
If you want to build a web site with great traffic, you might do well to study this one:

If you have an Alexa toolbar in your browser, switch to the page and notice the traffic rating. It will probably be close to the top 100,000 or better. It has, to our knowledge been over the top 80,000 and is receiving something like 4,000 visitors daily.
The only this this site has going for it is CONTENT.
The subject doesn't have to be pleasant, nor popular, nor well presented but it must be one which people can feel passionate about and traffic will find you.
Search engine rankings will be great:
Do a google search on these keywords for the net:
Chernobyl or "ghost town" and see what you find
Can't find what you need? Maybe Google can help . . .
Yet if you search for something like "Nuclear Disaster", the ranking isn't great.
The point is that if the web site content is there, people will find you in spite of the search engines.
Did you study the results of the searches? Many of the sites were links which led to this page.
Other ways in which this page has been publicized is in peoples blogs, and via e-mail recommendations. All these things demand only one ingredient: site content.
Never forget this one vital ingredient:
CONTENT,
give your visitors lots of it and your site will succeed in getting as much traffic as you can handle.
